The family of Map Kong—the Cambodian native and Minneapolis resident who was fatally shot by police in nearby Burnsville, Minnesota—says that he didn’t have a violent history.

"Now my son is going to be without his father and I don’t think that’s fair," said Chim Um, the mother of one of Map Kong’s children, to FOX9. Burnsville police shot Kong on Thursday (March 17). The officers were responding to a call from McDonald’s that Kong was allegedly acting strangely and brandishing a knife in a car.

"He could’ve been waving his keys [or] his phone," said Diane Cheney, Kong’s aunt. "Who knows? It’s early morning."

CBS Minnesota reported that this is the first time in 35 years that a suspect has died in a Burnsville officer-involved shooting. The medical report attributed Kong’s death to multiple gunshot wounds.

All five involved officers were wearing body cameras. They are now on standard administrative lead. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting.
