The streaming network said in a statement that the multi-camera family sitcom, which focuses on three generations of a Cuban-American family, will return in 2019 with 13 half-hour episodes. The renewal comes 11 days after the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), Presente.org and partner groups issued an open letter advocating for a third season of the acclaimed series.

"We congratulate Netflix for giving ‘One Day at a Time’ a third season," NHMC president Alex Nogales wrote in a statement about the renewal. “The show provides a multi-dimensional portrayal of a Cuban-American family, made possible by the participation of Latino talent in front and behind of camera. The end result is fantastic, and the critics agree. We encourage Netflix to create more Latino themed programming, as we are 18 percent of the U.S. population and the Latino community is yearning for more inclusion in all media.”
