University of Michigan students started their day on an interesting note yesterday (September 26). A member of The Black Student Union shared photos of anti-Black flyers found posted on campus. Both flyers are labeled “Alt Right,” which shouts out what The Washington Post describes as “a sprawling coalition of reactionary conservatives who have lobbied to make the United States more ‘traditional,’ more ‘populist’ and more White.”

One, titled “Why White Women Shouldn’t Date Black Men,” uses “facts” to argue that Black men are abusive, murderous, STD-riddled idiots would only dilute their pure White blood. From the flyer: “Since 88 percent of Blacks have IQs under 100 and only 2.3 percent are smart enough to earn a good degree, being smart is an extreme trait for Blacks. Your kids would regress to a mean well below average for a White child.” It also highlights some individual violent relationships between Black men and White women.

The other flyer tells “Euro-Americans” that they should stop denying their heritage because “White people have the right to exist as White people.”

The school’s public affairs department posted a statement that decried the rhetoric used on the flyers—which were removed—and encouraged students to report future incidents to the Bias Response Team:

Messages of racial, ethnic or religious discrimination have no place at the University of Michigan. Targeted attacks against groups of people serve only to tear apart our university community. While we continue to defend any individual’s right to free speech on our campus, these types of attacks directed toward any individual or group, based on a belief or characteristic, are inconsistent with the university’s values of respect, civility and equality. We also have a responsibility to create a learning environment that is free of harassment. These are core values and guiding principles that will help us as we strive to live up to our highest ideals.
