Hundreds of protestors paraded a rainbow of banners throughout the streets of New Orleans on Saturday, August 20—just two weeks after severe floods ravaged the state. From “Another gulf is possible,” to “Migración sin miedo,” (“Migration without fear”), the slogans and messages on display during the Gulf Coast Interdependence Day march showed the solidarity across movements, including Black Lives Matter and Indigenous rights.
What kind of a Gulf are they talking about? One that the government doesn’t treat as a “sacrifice zone,” especially in the face of climate change, protestors claim. One that is free of a Cancer Alley and sinking land, a Gulf where federal governments respect Indigenous nations and their territories.
The protest launched the region’s campaign to end the auction of oil drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico. Colorlines followed the #NoNewLeases and #AnotherGulf hashtags to bring you some of the most stunning video and images from Saturday’s march.
