Singer-songwriter Jamila Woods delivers an explosive ode to #BlackGirlMagic in the new music video for her song, "Blk Girl Soldier." 

"See she’s telepathic/call it Black girl magic/yeah she scares the gov’ment/deja vu of Tubman," she sings over a propulsive beat as the video opens. The camera, which starts out tight on Woods’ face, zooms out to reveal pictures of Rosa Parks (who is addressed alongside Assata Shakur and Ella Baker as "freedom fighters" in the song’s second verse) and other Black women who fought for racial justice. The video also features two young Black girls flanking Woods in various choreographed dance sequences.

"Hair beads and rollers are symbols of Black girlhood to me," Woods told Complex about the video. "I thought, what would it look like to arm ourselves with our own essence?" Check out the video for the answer to that question.

You might remember Woods from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ "White Privilege II"; she helped write the song and sang on the track. The Chicago native—who more recently collaborated with Chance the Rapper on his mixtape "Coloring Book"—also appeared in our video interview with the song’s creators. 

Woods’ solo debut, "Heavn," will drop at the end of June via Chicago-based label Closed Sessions.
