The Bronx Burns in New Trailer for ‘The Get Down’

"The Get Down" features a star-studded cast, but the new trailer focuses on the show’s real protagonist: late-1970s New York City.

The latest trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s ("Moulin Rouge") Netflix series depicts stars Justice Smith ("Paper Towns"), Shameik Moore ("Dope") and Herizen Guardiola ("Runaway Island") as they navigate the Bronx’s crushing poverty and burning buildings—plus family disapproval and endemic violence—to create the art brimming inside them. True to hip-hop, disco and punk’s roots in this volatile period of New York’s history, the trailer depicts a New York City that is barely recognizable today.

Set to songs with lyrics penned by rap icon Nas, who also executive produces the show, "The Get Down’s" trailer also features appearances from Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad") and Jimmy Smits ("The West Wing"). The musical drama’s first six episodes debut August 12 on Netflix, with an additional seven episodes arriving at an undisclosed date. Watch the trailer above.
