Bobby Brown Breaks Silence on Bobbi Kristina, Substance Abuse in New ’20/20′ Interview

By Sameer Rao Jun 08, 2016

Bobby Brown largely stayed out of the spotlight after his daughter Bobbi Kristina’s death last year. The 22-year-old died six months after she was found unresponsive in a bathtub with drugs in her system—a scenario that eerily mirrored the 2012 death of her mother, Whitney Houston.

The singer and longtime tabloid fixture broke his silence during an interview on ABC’s "20/20" that aired last night (June 7).

Brown and host Robin Roberts covered a lot of territory during the interview, which ran in promotion of his new memoir, "Every Little Step." Brown notably discussed his, Houston and Bobbi Kristina’s issues with substance dependency in depth. According to excerpts provided by ABC, Brown said he first saw Houston use drugs right before their 1992 wedding. "She did drugs, but drugs didn’t do her," he said. "She knew how to handle herself."

He also said that he and Houston tried to shield their daughter from their drug use: "I always made a point to not let her see me or my wife in that type of situation, in that type of feeling."

An additional excerpt published by People revealed Brown’s suspicion that Nick Gordon, Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend who spent his adolescence in the Houston home, knows more about how Bobbi Kristina and Houston died than he lets on. "I don’t know what happened that night," he said. "But he does." A $50 million wrongful death civil suit against Gordon, filed by Bobbi Kristina’s conservator, includes Brown as a plaintiff.
