WATCH: Maxwell, Aloe Blacc Sing For Poor People’s Campaign At ‘We Are Here’ Concert

The Reverends Dr. William Barber II and Liz Theoharis commemorated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s intersectional anti-poverty movement with the announcement of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in Washington D.C. yesterday (December 4). Hours after announcing their 21st century version of the campaign, they joined a group of musicians and activists at the nearby Howard Theater for a concert to benefit the movement.

Harry Belafonte’s arts and social justice organization Sankofa.org produced “We Are Here" to raise funds and awareness for the new campaign. The organization partnered with the Campaign for Black Male Achievement, The Kairos Center and Repairers of the Breach to develop the concert. Corporate partner Ben & Jerry’s livestreamed the show from its Facebook and YouTube pages.

“We Are Here" featured speeches from the campaign’s leaders, Belafonte and political commentator Van Jones. Musicians who graced the stage with passionate sets included Yara AllenAloe Blacc, Sweet Honey in the Rock and concert closer Maxwell.
