On Sunday (November 20), activists will gather and hold space across the world for Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day designed to memorialize and honor the people killed in transphobic violence. Trans and gender non-conforming people of color are disproportionately the victims of this fatal hate.

This year, advocacy organization Forward Together and various partner groups will bring artists and activists together for the third annual Trans Day of Resilience project. Forward Together describes the Trans Day of Resilience as "an extension and re-imagining of Transgender Day of Remembrance." The description continues: "Trans Day of Resilience goes beyond remembrance and uplifts the resilience and power of trans and gender non-conforming communities of color."

 

To that end, seven trans justice-involved organizations partnered with seven trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) artists to create works that uplift the TGNC community’s leadership and aspirations. "For me, this project is a great way for us as TGNC folx of color to shift the struggles and tragedies many of us face into powerful reimaginings and meaningful experiences that illuminate our collective resilience," Edxie Betts, a participating artist who was matched with San Francisco’s TGI Justice Project, said in an emailed statement.

The artists worked within a framework described in a four-point "Femifesto," which envisions trans liberation through art within anti-racist and anti-transmisogynist principles. See—and purchase—the images here.

Remembrance events were held earlier this week in New Orleans and New York, and two more are planned for Sunday in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Visit the project’s website for more ways to participate online.
