Trailer for ‘Love Is_’ Explores Black Power Couple’s Origin Story

By Sameer Rao May 16, 2018

"Black Lightning" co-creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil first met in the 1990s, when they were in the early stages of their prolific entertainment careers. The Akils revisit that time in "Love Is_," the new romantic drama series they developed for Oprah Winfrey Network. The channel released the show’s first trailer yesterday (May 15).

According to OWN, "Love Is_" chronicles the burgeoning relationship between sitcom writer Nuri (Michele Weaver, "Illicit") and aspiring filmmaker Yasir (Will Catlett, "Giants"). The trailer shows them falling in love against the backdrop of the late-’90s entertainment industry, where television shows like "Moesha" (where Brock Akil worked when she first met her future husband) offered opportunities to a new class of Black screen artists. The couple executive produces the series, with Brock Akil working as showrunner.

"Love Is" premieres June 19 on OWN.
