In yet another event that is making this Black History Month the best one ever, President Obama announced yesterday (February 24) that he will nominate Carla D. Hayden to run the largest library in the world. Hayden currently serves as CEO of Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library system. If confirmed by Senate, she will be both the first woman and the first African American to fill this role in the national library’s 216-year history.

In it, she discusses why she loves libraries and the significance of her nomination: “Being the first female and the first African American really brings together two aspects of, of course, my life that make this even more significant, I think in terms of how people view the future of libraries and what a national library can be. It’s inclusive, it can be part of everyone’s story. I believe in what libraries can be for a civilized society and a country that is open to all.”
