While retired legendary NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens is well-known for his controversial on- and off-field behavior, he now definitively looks like the innocent party in a recent incident that has made waves in the sports world.

TMZ published a video from Tuesday night that shows Owens at a Brentwood, California, Starbucks, exchanging heated words after Owens told a man, who was allegedly screaming at him, to quiet down. The man accused Owens of kicking him during that exchange, but the video goes on to show Owens walking away from the confrontation before, according to the The Huffington Post, the man called him a variety of racial slurs that seem pulled straight out of an episode of “The Boondocks.” Owens said that this happened after the man threw a cup of liquid through his car window, after which he fired an empty cup back at the man.

The man in question allegedly filed a report with police, saying that Owens assaulted  him. When the man, a 28-year-old identified only as “Arman,” was confronted by TMZ, he initially denied using racist language. When TMZ showed him the video evidence, he changed his tune, admitting to using the langauge, but still remaining unapologetic.

“I just wanted to make him mad and sad. I’m Middle Eastern and Muslim and not KKK.”

“There’s freedom of speech but there’s not freedom of attack. He kicked me in the Starbucks.”

Owens, for his part, said that people are encouraging him to report this as a hate crime.
