Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday (June 5) defended the Trump administration’s "zero tolerance" policy that separates immigrant parents from their children after crossing the border.

"We believe every person that enters the country illegally like that should be prosecuted," Sessions said during a lengthy interview with conservative radio host and attorney Hugh Hewitt. "And you can’t be giving immunity to people who bring children with them recklessly and improperly and illegally." 

During the interview, in which Hewitt repeatedly voiced concern about the separation tactic, Sessions said that children, including infants, are well cared for in hundreds of facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). However, Sessions admitted that he has not visited any HHS facilities. "But I believe for the most part they’re well taken care of," he said.

Pressed by Hewitt on whether the children had access to legal representation, and if he believes unaccompanied minors have a moral right to an attorney, Sessions said: "No, I don’t think it’s a moral right."
