Jordan Davis Should Have Turned 21 Today

By Kenrya Rankin Feb 16, 2016

Today, February 16, 2016, is the day that Jordan Davis should have turned 21. But on November 23, 2012, Michael Dunn picked up his gun and shot the teenager three times because he refused to turn down his music at a Jacksonville gas station. Dunn is White. Davis, who was 17 at the time of his murder, was Black.

Dunn claimed self defense, but he was convicted on three counts of attempted murder for the shots that he fired at the other teens who were in the car with Davis. It took a second trial for a jury to find him guilty of first-degree murder. The judge sentenced him to life plus 90 years.

Lucia McBath, Davis’ mother, said it all at Dunn’s sentencing hearing: “For me, there will be no college graduation. For me, there will be no daughter-in-law. For me, there will be no grandchildren. For me, there will be no future generation to carry on the heritage of mine. For me, there is only the hope I cling to that I will walk hand-in-hand with Jordan again when I come home to heaven to rest.”

Say his name.
