By Sameer Rao May 03, 2016

Smash musical "Hamilton" rode its history-making winning streak even further today (May 3) with the announcement of a record 16 Tony Award nominations.

According to The New York Times, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s breakout hit received the most nominations of any musical in the Broadway awards’ history. The hip-hop-influenced musical, a semi-historical account of founding father Alexander Hamilton, received nominations in all major theater categories. Some "Hamilton" performers—like Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. for "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical"—will face off in the same category.

Other nominees, announced by perfomers Nikki M. James and Andrew Rannells from "The Book of Mormon."  include "The Color Purple" with four nominations and "Eclipsed" with six, including one for "Best Play."
