The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the full list of Oscar nominees this morning (January 23). Like the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards before, the 90th Academy Awards nominee pool is less racially diverse than last year’s. That said, most of the Academy’s biggest acting and creative categories feature at least one artist of color.
Fantasy thriller “The Shape of Water” leads the race with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Octavia Spencer. Del Toro also shares a Best Writing (Original Screenplay) nod with Vanessa Taylor.
Hit horror film “Get Out” received four nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role for Daniel Kaluuya, Best Director and Best Writing (Original Screenplay)—the last two of which went to debut feature writer and director Jordan Peele.
“Mudbound” also earned four nominations, with three honoring the historical drama’s key artists of color. Writer and director Dee Rees shares a Best Writing (Adapated Screenplay) nomination with executive producer Virgil Williams. The Academy recognized Mary J. Blige with nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Music (Original Song). She splits the latter nomination with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson for the song, “Mighty River.”
The only other acting nominee of color is Denzel Washington, whose performance in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” garnered a Best Actor in a Leading Role nod.
Yance Ford and “Strong Island,” the documentary about his brother’s killing by a White man and family’s subsequent struggle for justice, compete in the Best Documentary (Feature) category against Syrian Civil War doc “Last Men in Aleppo” and “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail,” which chronicles a Chinese-American bank’s criminal trial for mortgage fraud.
Racial justice history made its way into the short groups, thanks to a Best Short Film (Live Action) nomination for “My Nephew Emmett,” which follows Mose Wright’s attempts to protect his nephew, Emmett Till, from being lynched.
