December Kicks Off as #NoDAPL Global Month of Action

For the month of December, water protectors on the frontlines of the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline want everyone to join the fight. Today (December 1) marks the launch of the #NoDAPL Global Month of Action.

The goal of the action is to target the project’s financial security. If the pipeline isn’t completed by January 1, when stakeholder contracts are up for renegotiation or cancellation, the project could be defeated if enough stakeholders walk out, according to the action’s website.

Actions which allies can take from anywhere in the world include disrupting banks that fund the project (TD Bank, Citi Bank and Wells Fargo) by organizing direct actions and closing accounts.  To date, two Norwegian investors have divested from the project: Odin Fund Management on November 24 and DNB on November 17.

The website also asks supporters to call the sheriff departments responsible for previous violent attacks on pipeline opponents. (The departments and contact info are listed online.) Water protectors say that the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office withdrew its force from North Dakota after protests in Minneapolis.

So far, actions have happened in cities including London, Philadelphia and Chicago. The organizer’s website asks people to register their actions here.
