Chance the Rapper expanded his reach into the media world by purchasing Chicagoist, a now-defunct news website focusing on his hometown. The 25-year-old artist mentioned the acquisition in a verse from “I Might Need Security,” one of four new songs he released today (July 19).
I donate to the schools next, they call me a deadbeat daddy But Sun-Times get in that Rauner business I got a hit-list so long I don’t know how to finish I bought the Chicagoist just to run you racist bitches out of business
Chance confirmed the purchase in a press statement. “I’m extremely excited to be continuing the work of the Chicagoist, an integral local platform for Chicago news, events and entertainment,” he said, according to Variety. “I look forward to relaunching it and bringing the people of Chicago an independent media outlet focused on amplifying diverse voices and content.”
Variety adds that Chance purchased Chicagoist from WNYC through Social Media LLC, his new company dedicated to media diversity and local investigative reporting, for an undisclosed sum. WNYC previously purchased Chicagoist, and partner sites Gothamist and DNA Info, after publisher Jim Ricketts shuttered them in late 2017. The billionaire founder of TD Ameritrade made the move soon after the staffers voted to unionize through the Writers Guild of America East.
