#POCMedalWatch: Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Laurie Hernandez Bolster Team USA Medal Count

By Sameer Rao Aug 10, 2016

We started #POCMedalWatch on Monday (August 8) to honor and recognize the American Olympians of color dominating the field at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro right now. Last night’s (August 9) gymnastics victories gave Team USA a whole host of new gold medals, widening it’s lead over China at the top of the current medal standings. Here are the new additions to #POCMedalWatch:

Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles and Laurie Hernandez, Gymnastics
Ignore the bizarre criticism Douglas is receiving for not putting her hand over her heart during the national anthem—she, Biles and Hernandez each already showed up for the U.S. by winning three gold medals in the women’s team all-around gymanstics competition. Both Douglas and Biles are Black, and Hernandez’s family hails from Puerto Rico.

These new medals contribute to Team USA’s total of 28 overall, eight of which were earned by people of color. You can see videos of Douglas, Biles and Hernandez’s performances via NBC Sports’ YouTube channel.
