Native Activist Rexdale Henry Found Dead in Mississippi Police Custody

One day after Sandra Bland was found dead in her jail cell, noted Native activist Rexdale Henry was found dead, two states away, while locked up for a similar crime.

Henry, 53, was found dead on July 14 inside the Neshoba County Jail in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He was being held after being arrested over failure to pay a minor traffic citation.

Henry, a member of the Choctaw tribe who was a candidate for the Choctaw Tribal Council from Bouge Chitto, was known in the community as a prominent advocate for criminal justice and Native issues. Officials have not yet made public the results of a state autopsy that might indicate the cause of his death. After funeral services on July 19, his body was flown to Florida for a private autopsy that was paid for by anonymous donors.  The results of this autopsy will likely be made public when they are available.
