Carlos, who famously raised the Black Power fist on the winner’s stand at the 1968 Olympics, addressed the importance of Black athletes’ activism in a new Vox piece.

The photo, featuring the cadets raising their fists, received criticism from those who thought they broke rules banning uniformed cadets from political involvement. 

The image may violate a directive that discourages any “partisan political activity” by uniformed service members.
