Actor Wendell Pierce, perhaps best known as “Detective William ‘Bunk’ Moreland” on HBO’s “The Wire,” just announced his involvement in a new Baltimore apartment complex project.
Pierce discussed his investment in the $20 million project while sitting on a Columbia University panel on community activism on Saturday (April 9). The panel also featured his “The Wire” co-stars Sonja Sohn, Felicia Pearson and Jamie Hector. According to Fusion, Pierce said that some of the units will be offered to local artists at discounted rates. He also said that the project will involve Baltimore residents as part of the labor force: ”They’re not going to be the entire workforce, but we wanted to put together a jobs program for people from the community.”
Pierce told Fusion that the project will be part of an ongoing job creation effort in the city where “The Wire” was shot. “We hope to take it into the row houses too,” he said. “This is a pilot program to make sure that the template is there.”
Construction is slated to begin in July, with an estimated winter 2017 completion date.
