Will There Be An Outkast Biopic?

By Sameer Rao Sep 15, 2015

There will never be another group like Outkast. Breakneck-raps that mix social criticism with kitchen sink realism and Afro-futurist abstractions over innovative beats—from a duo, no less—don’t have the commercial viability that they used to. Big Boi and André 3000 showed the music-loving world how high Southern hip-hop could set its artistic benchmark, and became world superstars in the process.

Now, the Atlanta duo just might have their career immortalized on the big screen. Big Boi alleged as much in a Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything") he did late last week with indie-electronica group Phantogram, with whom the emcee is crafting a soon-to-be-released collaboration album. When one fan asked if there would ever be an Outkast biopic, Big Boi responded by saying, "Me and ‘Dre were just discussing this over Labor Day. Stay tuned.”

While Big Boi has been steadily putting out music since Outkast’s last joint album (2007’s "Idlewild"), André 3000 has, save for a few guest spots for artists like Rich Boy and Frank Ocean, focused on acting. He most notably starred as Jimi Hendrix in the biopic "Jimi: All Is By My Side." The group reunited in 2014 for a series of festival and one-off shows, but they are not pledging to do any new material or go on a large-scale tour.

While we’re excited at the prospect of an Outkast biopic that does the legendary group due justice, Key & Peele already showed us why they think any alleged projects involving the two are likely just that—allegations:
