What You Need to Know About Serena Williams’ Return to Wimbledon

By Sameer Rao Jun 29, 2018

As The Associated Press reports today (June 29), Serena Williams entered Wednesday’s (June 27) Wimbledon draw while ranked 183 in the Women’s Tennis Association‘s standings—well below many of her prospective competitors. But thanks to her previous accomplishments, including seven previous Wimbledon trophies in women’s singles competitions, she earned a 25th seed placement.

This will be Williams’ second go at a Grand Slam tournament after taking a break to give birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia. Her first attempt, at the French Open, abruptly ended when she withdrew due to a muscular injury.

She returns to the British grass courts to represent Wakanda—er, the United States—in the first round of Wimbledon against Dutch player Arantxa Rus on Monday (July 2). Watch her play via ESPN, which will air first round matches starting at 6:30 a.m. EST. Catch catch pre- and post-match interviews and highlights throughout the tournament via the Wimbledon YouTube channel.
