Eighteen years ago, an album was unleashed on the world that transformed hip-hop, helped bring absurdism and cabaret-level theatrics to the mainstream, and propelled at least a half-dozen music superstars to greatness. That album was the great Missy Elliott’s studio debut, "Supa Dupa Fly," and it reaches legal adulthood today. For that reason, Missy Elliott (and, by extension, the album) is our woman crush of today. 

The album, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 200 and has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide to date, is maybe the clearest example of present-day-hitmaker Timbaland’s production prowess, taking syncopated and angular beats to a new level. Superstars of varying contemporary relevance (Ginuwine, Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Kim and the late Aaliyah) were all featured on the album as well. Propelled by funky, eccentric singles and videos for songs like "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," "Hit Em wit da Hee," "Sock It 2 Me," and "Beep Me 911," the album was a wild opening shot for one of hip-hop’s most celebrated female superstars. 

As Elliott preps her latest album (her first in a decade while she was recovering from Graves’ Disease) and enlists some of the old collaborators in solidfying her legacy, we can be confident in knowing that the music-loving world wouldn’t be the same without her footprint.
