The above video, courtesy of Miss World, isn’t déjà vu, but a cultural breakthrough. For the fifth time this year and the first time ever in beauty pageant history, Black women claimed every major crown. Jamaica’s Toni-Ann Singh won Miss World on Saturday (December 14), and joined Miss USA’s Cheslie Kryst, Miss Teen USA’s Kaliegh Garris, Miss America’s Nia Franklin and Miss Universe’s Zozibini Tunzi. Even Miss Nigeria’s Nyekachi Douglas, who lost to Singh, could not contain her Black woman joy, as her reaction went as viral as Singh’s.

On Sunday (December 15), ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis spoke with Kryst, Garris and Tunzi about these historic moments. “There was a time when we literally could not win. Literally, the Miss America competition banned Black women from competing,” said Kryst. “The Miss Universe organization did not crown a Black Miss USA until 1990. Like, there was no space for us.” The times have changed.
