WATCH: New Trailer for Ava DuVernay’s ‘Queen Sugar’

By Kenrya Rankin Jul 22, 2016

Director and producer Ava DuVernay dropped a trailer yesterday (July 21) for her new show “Queen Sugar,” and it already looks like it is going to be epic.

There was no doubt the show would be cinematic in scope, and the trailer proves the case, with gorgeous backdrops, an intriguing cast of Black stars—Rutina Wesley (“True Blood”), Dawn-Lyen Gardner (“Luke Cage”) and Kofi Siriboe (“Awkward.”)—and all the markings of a compelling, fully fleshed out world.

The show, based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 book of the same name, tells the story of a family who moves to Louisiana to run an inherited sugarcane farm, all while battling personal and public demons. The show is executive produced by DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. The first two episodes will air back to back on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on September 6 and 7.
