Warning: HBO’s new teaser for Issa Rae’s upcoming comedy series “Insecure” might leave you feeling, well, insecure.

The trailer begins with Rae’s character (also named “Issa”) speaking to a classroom of predominantly Black youth. One student asks her, ”Why you talk like a White girl?” to which she responds, “Haha, you caught me, I’m rocking Blackface!” to stunned silence. The following scenes show her character enduring racist microaggressions from coworkers, and struggling in a romantic relationship while cutting back to the classroom where a student echoes her father’s disdain of “bitter-ass Black women.”

Like Rae’s acclaimed web series, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” “Insecure” explores how Issa handles love and work in a society that routinely pigeonholes and undervalues Black women.

Show writer Natasha Rothwell mentioned the show’s diverse writing staff—a rarity in Hollywood—when we interviewed her in March. ”I think there’s one straight White male in the room,” she explained, laughing. Larry Wilmore, host of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” is a consulting producer on the series.
