Uptown’s New Cover is the Epitome of #BlackGirlMagic

The ladies of “Eclipsed” took over the latest Uptown magazine cover, showering all comers with their collective #BlackGirlMagic.

Left to right and top to bottom, they are: Danai Gurira ( “The Walking Dead”), Saycon Sengbloh (“Motown”), Pascale Armand (“The Trip to Bountiful), Lupita Nyong’o (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”), Zainab Jah (“Law & Order: SVU) and Akosua Busia (“The Color Purple”).

Eclipsed,” which began previews this week, is Gurira’s brainchild. It follows five Liberian women as they create a new community after turmoil upends their lives. It is billed as the first Broadway play written, produced, directed and performed exclusively by Black women.

“That for me is really the most important thing, the exposure of these voices,” Gurira told Uptown. “Honestly, the reason why I write what I write is because it’s kind of inexplicable the silence and the lack of representation around these types of women and these stories.”
