Nearly a year to the date since the car crash that left Tracy Morgan with broken bones and severe brain trauma, the “30 Rock” star ended his silence with a “Today” show interview with Matt Lauer.
Gripping a cane and joined on camera by attorney Benedict Morelli, a visibly emotional Morgan described his difficult recovery process since last year’s accident, during which a Walmart truck crashed into a limo bus containing Morgan and several associates on the New Jersey turnpike.
“I don’t remember the accident,” confessed Morgan, who was left comatose with a broken leg, broken ribs and severe brain trauma after the crash. “I have my good days and my bad days. I forget things.”
James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, a fellow comedian who was a friend and mentor to Morgan, was killed; Morgan teared up when talking about McNair, who he last saw alive at the Delaware comedy show preceding the crash.
“The last time I saw Jimmy, Jimmy wrote a joke for me. It was a Donald Sterling Joke,” explained Morgan, adding “Two weeks later, after I came out the coma, my lady told me, ‘We put Jimmy to rest.” Walmart has agreed to a $10 million settlement to be paid to McNair’s children.
For those wondering about Morgan’s future, he intends to get better before getting back on stage. “I’ll get back to making you laugh, I promise!” he insisted to Lauer.
