Chances are, even if you know nothing about Tejano music or culture, you know about Selena. Known as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” Selena Quintanilla-Pérez elevated the genre to international renown. In the process—both with her group Selena y los Dinos and as a solo artist—she became an icon. Today (March 31) marks 21 years since Yolanda Saldívar shot and killed Selena. Saldívar was president of the singer’s fanclub and managed her Selena Etc. boutiques in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, with eligibility for parole in 2025.

Selena’s music and persona—buoyed by her signature fashion and prominence in a genre that didn’t have many female stars—grew in prominence after her murder. All but one of her five studio albums are certified by the Recording Industry Association of America as multiplatnum. The final one, 1995’s “Dreaming of You,” became the first predominantly Spanish-language album to debut at number one on the Billboard Top 200. And her legend continued to grow with a biopic, true crime specials, tribute shows and more.

In celebration of the star’s life, we present several of her biggest hits:
