In a unanimous ruling, The Supreme Court struck down a Massachusetts law that barred protests close to abortion clinics. The law established 35-foot buffer zones around the entrances to clinics. The plaintiffs, who claimed that they wanted to have quiet conversations about abortion alternatives with women at clinics, challenged the law on First Amendment grounds. The law was put into place, reports the New York Times, in response to harassment and violence at abortion clinics in Massachusetts, including a shooting spree at two facilities in 1994.
