Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) will play the lead in the forthcoming comic film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” Marvel Studios announced Saturday at Comic-Con (July 20), per Deadline. This marks the first time an Asian actor has starred in a big screen superhero franchise; Liu was born in China and raised in Canada.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of a China-based criminal mastermind who spent his childhood in a hidden, ancient fortress in China training in martial arts and philosophical disciplines, unaware of his father’s true identity. Everything changes when grown up Shang-Chi learns the truth about his father and declares war on him.

Also on board: Awkwafina, who was cast in an undisclosed role, and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, who is set to play The Mandarin. Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle”) will direct and Dave Callaham (“The Expendables 3”) is pegged to pen the script.
