Rihanna On The ‘Groundbreaking’ Response From Women of Color For Fenty Beauty Products

By Sameer Rao May 03, 2018

Rihanna, seemingly unwilling to confine her cultural dominance to music and film, kicked the cosmetic industry’s door down when she launched Fenty Beauty to multimillion-dollar success last year. The Barbadian musician, actress and fashion entrepreneur discussed the impact of her popular makeup line in Vogue magazine’s June 2018 cover story, which appeared online today (May 3).

The Fenty Beauty line features products in a multitude of shades—a rarity in an industry that often defines "nude" as shades lighter than most Black and Brown women’s skin tones. Rihanna told Vogue about the intent behind Fenty Beauty, as well as the unexpectedly strong response:

She had grown up watching her mother apply makeup, so thinking about foundations for darker skin tones came naturally. “As a Black woman, I could not live with myself if I didn’t do that,” she says. “But what I didn’t anticipate was the way people would get emotional about finding their complexion on the shelf, that this would be a groundbreaking moment.”

She carried this belief into Savage X Fenty, her nude lingerie line that debuts on May 11 and features products that cater to a multitude of skin shades and body types.
