Comic book author Edgardo Miranda-Rodriquez created Puerto Rican superhero La Borinqueña in part as a symbol of his people’s pride in the midst of the commonwealth’s crushing debt. Inspired by the Pulse massacre’s predominantly Latinx victims, Miranda-Rodriguez and illustrator Dennis Calero adapted La Borinqueña for a stunning tribute image and message of support:
The tribute image features the Afro-Latina superhero shedding a tear while holding a cape with the Puerto Rican and rainbow flags.
"I look at [the massacre] and if more than half were Puerto Rican, it’s something that affected the community—it’s an LGBT issue, a Puerto Rican issue and a Latinx issue," Miranda-Rodriguez told Latina.
