Poll: Half of Americans Surveyed Think Washington NFL Team’s Name is A-OK

A new poll from YouGov/Huffington Post found that 56 percent of those surveyed think the Washington NFL Team should keep its controversial name (you know what it is). Only 23 percent think it should be changed. What’s more, half (50 percent) don’t think the term is disparaging to Native Americans.

When broken down by age, the picture changes a bit. Forty-two percent of those ages 18 to 29 find the name disparaging, while 38 percent don’t. Among folks 45 and older, 28 percent have a problem with it, while a full 57 percent don’t see what the fuss is about.

Earlier this month, a judge ordered the cancelation of the team’s six federal trademark registrations because it is racist. Native American activists have been attempting to get the name changed since 1992. The NFL is footing the team’s bill in its legal fight to hold on to the trademark.
