OITNB Star Danielle Brooks to Co-Star With Jennifer Hudson In Broadway’s “The Color Purple”

Danielle Brooks, the actress known for her role as Taystee on the Netflix hit “Orange Is The New Black,” is heading to Broadway.

The Julliard graduate will join Jennifer Hudson in the latest musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Brooks will play Sofia, one of the three major female characters in the story who was originally depicted in a memorable performance by Oprah Winfrey in the eponymous film. Winfrey has signed on as a producer for the production and Hudson has been cast as Shug.  

According to Variety, the “Orange Is The New Black” star found inspiration to pursue an acting career after seeing the 2005 Broadway production of “The Color Purple.” She will continue filming for the third season of the popular TV show while appearing in “The Color Purple,” beginning in November.
