Spellcheck for Bias, a digital artificial intelligence tool that analyzes television and film scripts for bias related to gender, sexuality, race and disability is now helping identify and amplify Latinx representation in projects at Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, The Hollywood Reporter reported February 19. The software will zoom in on misrepresentation to aid in script revision and ensure that casting is reflective of the real world.

"The topic of onscreen representation remains at the forefront of all our conversations with leading coalitions, advocacy groups, and within our own organization, as we continue to address Latinx under-representation in the entertainment industry," said Janine Jones-Clark, a senior vice president at Universal. "We look forward to partnering with [the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the University of Southern California] on developing an innovative tool to help create more opportunities for positive and authentic Latinx portrayals, as well as for all underrepresented groups in the years to come."

Spellcheck for Bias will also receive extra scrutiny from advisers, including actress Kate del Castillo, America Ferrera’s company Harness, president of Will Packer Productions James Lopez, and New York Latino Film Festival’s founder Calixto Chinchilla.
