New Play Explores The Joy and Pain of Young Muslim-Americans

By Qimmah Saafir May 04, 2015

Five New Yorkers below the age of 30 share their experiences as Muslims onstage in “Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity,” a work of interview-based theater showing at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Long Island City.

According to The New York Times, this installment of Ping Chong + Company’s “Undesirable Elements” series delves into and challenges some of the myopic perceptions of Muslim identity by highlighting each of the participants’ life stories.

The common thread between all five people is hardship of marginalization due to religious identity, specifically as New Yorkers post-September 11.

"Undesirable Elements" is an ongoing series that began in 1992 to examine "issues of culture and identity of individuals who are outsiders within their mainstream community." There are more than 40 installments.
