At a press conference held Wednesday, an attorney for former McKinney police corporal Eric Casebolt said that his client was “in an emotional place” when he pinned black 15-year-old Dajerria Becton to the ground and pulled his gun on other teens at a local pool.

The attorney, Jane Bishkin, said that Casebolt had responded to two suicide calls earlier in the day before arriving at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool. One was an “African-American male” whose wife he “spent a considerable amount of time consoling.” The other was a teenage girl who he helped prevent from jumping off a roof. 

“With all that had happened that day, he allowed his emotions to get the better of him. Eric regrets that his conduct portrayed him and his department in a negative light. He never intended to mistreat anyone, but was only reacting to a situation and the challenges it represented. He apologies to all who were offended,” Bishkin said of her client, who is white. She also said that her client was not targeting minorities and that the video didn’t show the full scope of his actions that day. The statement noticeably did not refer to Becton by name.
