Maxine Waters Will Address Nation During ‘Angela Rye’s State of the Union’ Special

BET already has a coverage plan for President Donald Trump‘s State of the Union address to Congress tomorrow (January 30). U.S. Representative Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) will deliver a response to his remarks during "Angela Rye’s State of the Union," which will air Wednesday (January 31) at 10 p.m. EST.

A BET spokesperson told Buzzfeed News on Friday (January 26) that Waters, one of the president’s most vocal critics in Congress, will lead the program. Political strategist and program host Angela Rye confirmed this to The Root on Saturday (January 27). "Queen Maxine is going to hit the facts quick; she’s going to do it as only she can, but we’re not going to linger over his nonsense,” Rye told The Root.

BET released a statement today (January 29) that describes Waters’ speech as "an exclusive rebuttal to the president’s state of the union address." Buzzfeed News noted that Waters was a "dark horse" candidate to deliver the Democratic Party’s official response to Trump’s speech—an honor that instead went to Representative Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.).

The program will also feature a panel of experts discussing Trump’s first year in office and political resistance to his administration’s attacks on Black communities. Panelists include Black Alliance for Just Immigration executive director and Black Lives Matter Global Network co-founder Opal Tometi, Color of Change executive director Rashad Robinson, former House of Representatives minority leader Stacey Abrams (D-Ga.) and Stefanie Brown James, co-founder of political action organization The Collective.
