Actress Lupita Nyong’o is luminous on the cover of the latest issue of Vogue. Dressed in gold Valentino Haute Couture with her hair straining to touch the sky, the coverline refers to her as “La Femme Lupita.” It’s her second outing as a Vogue cover model; she first appeared there in July 2014. 

In the cover story, Nyong’o, who was raised in Kenya, talks about her upcoming projects (including “Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens”), the moment she realized racial identity was a thing to be considered in the United States (when a professor told her she needed extra writing help based on her skin color), and the good advice she got from Oprah:

"Oprah Winfrey advised me to figure out what my intention is and to act on it. I think I can make a difference by having certain stories be told. But it’s in the hope that I will not always be the only one telling them."

This is the second Vogue cover in a row featuring a black star. Beyoncé graced the cover of the coveted September issue. Launched in 1892, Vogue didn’t feature its first black cover model until Naomi Campbell in September 1989. Over the past 26 years, black women have been on the cover 34 times.
