Deadline revealed yesterday (February 21) that Lupita Nyong’o ("Black Panther") will produce and star in a feature film adaptation of "Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood," the best-selling memoir by Trevor Noah ("The Daily Show with Trevor Noah").

Nyong’o confirmed the news via her Instagram feed yesterday:

The entertainment news outlet reports that the Mexican-born Kenyan actress will produce the movie, also called "Born a Crime," alongside Noah. The 2016 memoir covers Noah’s childhood experiences in South Africa during apartheid. Its title references Noah having a Black mother and White father—a relationship that the White supremacist South African government criminalized. 

Nyong’o will also star as Noah’s mother, Patricia. Many of the stories Noah recounts feature his mother, including one in which she survives being shot in the head.

Deadline also notes that Nyong’o will produce and star in another project dealing with contemporary African identity: a screen adaptation of "Americanah," by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Nyong’o’s "Black Panther" co-star Danai Gurira ("All Eyez on Me") will write the script.
