LIVESTREAM: Watch Day Two of the Black Girl Movement Conference

By Sameer Rao Apr 07, 2016

For those who couldn’t make it to Columbia University’s first-ever Black Girl Movement (BGM) Conference, don’t worry—we’ve got the livestream right here.

According to its website, the BGM Conference specifically centers "Black girls, cis, queer and trans girls" as it works to empower Black girls and amplify their contributions to contemporary racial justice work:

Black girls are among the most significant cultural producers, community connectors and trendsetters, rarely are their contributions recognized or appreciated. At best, they remain invisible in our public discourse or people assume that all Black girls are doing fine and are "resilient" enough to overcome any structural obstacles put in their way. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Black girls in the United States are in crisis. They face significant barriers to educational achievement, economic and political equality, and are the recipients of deeply embedded racial and gender biases in the media, public policy, philanthropy and research.

"The Black Girl Movement Conference is a labor of love that seeks to provide a safe and empowering space for Black girls," Columbia University scholar and conference organizer Farah Jasmine Griffin said in an e-mail to Colorlines. "We want to highlight their courage, brilliance and originality while encouraging them to work toward a more just world."
