LISTEN: Sade Makes Triumphant Return on ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Soundtrack

By Sameer Rao Mar 07, 2018

For those of you who need calming energy today—maybe because Winter Storm Quinn forced you inside and you can’t do anything but reflect—here’s a sonic treat for you. Veteran R&B artist Sade broke nearly seven years of musical silence with a new song, "Flower of the Universe." She posted a lyric video for the song, which appears on the soundtrack for “A Wrinkle in Time," yesterday (March 6).

"Wrinkle" director Ava DuVernay first announced the tune via Twitter on February 20:

"Flower of the Universe" appeared ready for the world when hip hop producer No I.D. tweeted a link to the song on Audiomack.com yesterday; the website removed the song several hours later.

Variety reports that the lyric video features the official acoustic guitar-driven version of the song. No I.D. shared the remix he produced, which features a minimalist electronic beat.

DuVernay said in a statement to Variety that she "reverse engineered the usual process," in which a musician uses the film to influence the song for a soundtrack, and instead incorporated Sade’s lyrics into the movie dialogue.

"Flower of the Universe" is the first full song released from the "Wrinkle" soundtrack. Disney announced the tracklist for the album, which DuVernay produced, on February 20. DuVernay previously tweeted clips of two songs: “Warrior" by Chloe x Halle and “Magic" by Sia.

Disney included another track, "Let Me Live" by Kehlani, in a commercial promoting the album:

In addition, "Good Morning America" teased the audio and music video for "I Believe," a song from the movie by Demi Lovato and DJ Khaled, yesterday:

An announcement from Disney confirmed that the "Wrinkle" soundtrack will debut this Friday (March 9), the same day as the film.
