MTV will honor Lena Waithe and her groundbreaking career with the Trailblazer Award at this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards.
"Through writing and acting, Waithe has wielded her voice with stunning results during her short time in the spotlight," MTV noted in an announcement yesterday (May 21). The statement went on to highlight several of Waithe’s most notable accomplishments, including: becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy Award for comedy writing, depicting her fellow Chicagoans of color with humanity on "The Chi," supporting underrepresented artists through The Blacklist and proudly shining light on Black and gay communities.
“Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling,” MTV’s general manager Amy Doyle wrote in an emailed statement. “Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year’s Trailblazer Award.”
