You might’ve missed this footnote in our report on the police confrontation this weekend in Cleveland: that Kendrick Lamar’s becoming a central figure for those fighting for black lives.
Indeed, as police and Movement for Black Lives attendees/activists in Cleveland faced off over the arrest of a 14-year-old boy on Sunday, protestors chanted Lamar’s latest single “Alright” (whose video features scenes of police violence). Various news outlets picked up the news when video of the chanting (which you can see below) emerged on the Internet.
Lamar generated controversy earlier in the summer when he performed the song at the BET awards while standing on top of a vandalized police car. You can see the video of that performance in the link below.
