ICYMI: Beyoncé and Dixie Chicks Crushed CMAs With ‘Daddy Lessons’ Performance

By Sameer Rao Nov 03, 2016

Beyoncé solidified her place in the country music canon with "Lemonade" track "Daddy Lessons," a shuffling acoustic number that pointed towards the genre’s often-forgotten origins in Southern Black blues and folk music. She asserted that place performing the song, alongside country legends Dixie Chicks, to raucous applause at last night’s (November 2) Country Music Awards (CMAs).

As The Root noted, the performance’s surprise announcement upset numerous country music fans who thought the genre-spanning artist should not be recognized as a country artist. These arguments didn’t dissuade Dixie Chicks, who co-signed the song by performing it on tour earlier this year
