Gloria Calderón Kellett, the showrunner of Netflix’s Latinx reboot of "One Day at a Time," launched a social media campaign with "Vida" creator Tanya Saracho to combat the presidential administration’s family separation policy last week. Today (June 29) in the Hollywood Reporter, Kellett discussed how they turned a social media call-to-action into a commitment from at least 70 shows to support the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), one of several nonprofits working at the border.

This is terrible what’s happening to these children and we’re like, "What can we do? … We’re both running shows. We’re busy. We can’t get down there. … It was Tanya’s idea, like, "Hey, maybe our shows can amplify the message so that it’s not forgotten." … We were like, "Well, let’s amplify it through our shows and maybe we’ll challenge other shows. [M]aybe a couple of shows will give some money that can help with the legal fees of those that are being detained to just get there kids back." And that’s really how it started. It was really just a simple thing of uniting with [our writing] rooms and taking a photo to say we stand with humanity.
