‘Hamilton’ Could Hit a Movie Theater Near You

Those who couldn’t see "Hamilton" on Broadway the first time around may finally get a chance to see the show with the original Tony-winning cast.

Two anonymous sources told The Wall Street Journal yesterday (July 24) that Hollywood studios are in a bidding war for the rights to a movie version of the musical, which brings a multiracial cast and hip hop score to the story of Alexander Hamilton. Instead of a live-action adaptation, in the vein of "Les Misérables," the movie will reportedly use a 2016 official recording of a staged performance. This version includes the original Broadway stars, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in the title role that he left in 2016. Miranda has not commented on the report as of press time.

The sources told The WSJ that several studios, including 21st Century Fox and Warner Bros.—the latter of which recently acquired the movie rights to Miranda’s "In the Heights”—placed bids on the project. The sources, described as people with "knowledge of the deal talks," added that the film will likely debut in 2020 or 2021.
